Åndalsnes, Norway-The Capital Of Norwegian Mountaineering.

Updated: Nov 3

Created by 3GoExploring.

Famed for its high peaks and long mountaineering history, Andalsnes is known as the alpine village by the fjord, a spectacular location that won't disappoint. There was only ever going to be one location at this port, the hike to the Rampestreken viewpoint, a trail which was partly built by Nepalese Sherpas.

This hike is not to be underestimated, it is extremely steep with tree roots and stony outcrops with the trail close to sheer drops. We had already researched this and wore the appropriate walking attire for safety and mapping to keep to the route.

The walk to the start of the trail is just outside of the village. From the start you climb, easy to begin with but as you ascend you encounter tree roots and plenty of slippery sections, handrails are provided to aid your ascent. Be mindful of the sheer drops especially if you have younger members of the group, there are no barriers.

As you near the viewpoint you climb a section of steps, nothing better than the burn on those calves! The viewpoint was as expected outstanding, be brave and walk out to the end you will be rewarded with spectacular views.

After the viewpoint the trail continues up to the gondola station, giving further views across the mountains and the majestic fjord. At this point 3 Go Exploring became 2 Go Exploring for the descent, the gondola was a much easier route back down for one member of our group. The descent is as challenging as the ascent and one or two slips and trips were encountered but we made it safely down and back to the ship for a well-earned lunch.
