Skagen Denmark - Where Two Seas Collide.

Updated: Oct 20

Skagen last port day of our Scandinavian cruise and as predicted the weather gods are not being nice… Up nice and early however, the persistent heavy rain, lightning and thunder has put a delay for our final exploration of Denmark. After a couple of coffees, the occasional Danish pastry from the buffet we spotted a break in the weather. Waterproofs were going to be essential for our walk today, destination Grenen a unique natural phenomenon, where the Baltic and North Sea meet.

Leaving the ship we decided to jump on the shuttle bus hoping the 10 minute ride would allow the rain deluge to subside. Arriving in the town centre waterproofs on we headed from the drop off point towards the coast. As we walked away the rain started to subside, hopefully this would give us time to reach our destination.

Bascule Light, a replica of the 1627 ships navigational warning beacon

First point of call Bascule Light, a replica of the 1627 ships navigational warning beacon. From a distance this large wooden structure looked very much like the trebuchets found in medieval times.

Skagen Battery, this impressive German coastal defence tasked with protecting the harbour during the Second World War.

Continuing our walk, we headed onto the beach to view the Skagen Battery, this impressive German coastal defence tasked with protecting the harbour during the Second World War.

Armed with four 12-centimeter guns with a range of 10km “borrowed” form the Danish Armed Forces.

Skagen Gray Lighthouse, housing a centre to learn about migratory birds

Not far from the Battery is the Skagen Gray Lighthouse, housing a centre to learn about migratory birds. From here our final destination was a walk along the coastline, renowned for its grey seal population we were anticipating seeing these beautiful mammals in their unspoiled habitat. However, unfortunately the only sight we saw was the remains of seal washed up on the beach, sad but a part of the circle of life.

Finally reaching Grenen and the meeting of the two seas, the tip of Denmark and a poignant end to our adventure. We stood and watched the waves from the two seas meet and looked up to see the gathering rain clouds, a good time to make our return to the ship.

Grenen and the meeting of the two seas,

Returning back the way we came we took the opportunity to visit the sights of the town before returning for a well-earned hot drink and of course a bite to eat.
