As you can imagine entertainment onboard a cruise is a major factor and on our 14 night voyage to Spain & Portugal it ranged from dazzling aerialists to Cornish comedians and of course Take That's Gary Barlow.
As Iona guest capacity well exceeds the capacity for its entertainment venues, shows are repeated to allow all guests the opportunity to watch. You'll be advised to pre-book all entertainment for the main theatre known as Headliners prior to boarding, the shows available for us were:
Digital: Headliners Theatre Company
Take That: Greatest Days: Headliners Theatre Company
Festival: Headliners Theatre Company
Benjamin Moss
Laura Evans
And of course Gary Barlow!
Unfortunately we did experience a few technical glitches in the theatre with the cast of the Headliners Theatre Company, (known as the resident company onboard every P&O ship). Digital was paused mid performance due to a technical issue and the ending was changed and as they say the show must go on! Sadly, our luck was not fairing well again with shows, as we had the Greatest Days show cancelled within 10 minutes, due to a separate technical issue.
In the Clubhouse you have entertainment which you don't have to pre-book. You do get to see acts such as Benjamin Moss and Laura Evans who also performed in the Headliners Theatre in a more relaxed environment.
The Clubhouse fills very quickly so arrive early to guarantee a seat and avoid disappointment, the Clubhouse also hosts game shows, bingo, and comedians and these are all detailed in the Horizon newspaper.
Gary Barlow's event was a brilliant extension to our adventure in Lisbon. When we boarded Iona everyone was given a slip for us to sign and donate £10 to Teenage Cancer Trust and Child Bereavement UK and all tickets were chosen at luck for a seat to see Gary Barlow at either 8pm or 10pm and we received the lucky golden ticket! The show was amazing and a total of £27000 was raised for the two charities.
Another area of great entertainment that differs from the smaller ships is the SkyDome, typically every other night the aerialists put on a dazzling performance, the shows we saw were:
Rise
Triboo
Birds
We did feel that ‘Birds’ was more oriented to families not our favourite show however, the aerialists were fantastic. We noticed some nights there would be clashes with shows on in the Headliners Theatre and in the SkyDome, this is due to the capacity of Iona so planning is required on some days if you want to see everything.
We also found a range of music in the Grand Atrium, ranging from Buskers to Pianists. On both sea and port days the onboard cinema shows a range of movies from The Fall Guy, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, IF to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Iona has 4 screens with approximately 30 seats per screening, again these fill very quickly on sea days and we would recommend being there 30 minutes before the start to guarantee a seat.
There are also guest speakers onboard during sea days, on Iona these started at 1130 and clashed with the midday Captains brief which isn't repeated. Previously on other ships we've had a wider selection of speakers, from Nigel Marven a British Wildlife Presenter to Psychologist David Sanders. Iona only had one speaker a day unlike other ships in the fleet that have multiple guest speakers in a day, which does break up the sea days!
Our next voyage is onboard Ventura and we're intrigued to know what the entertainment will be on offer.
