Skarsteinssætra Norway, a summer pasture farm

A beautiful tranquil Village nestled within the Vestland Country with a population of 479. What to do in Olden?

Many people choose to go up the Loen Sky Lift a gondola ride, one of the world’s steepest cable cars taking you to Mt. Hoven. Understandably this is a fantastic opportunity that will give you spectacular views across the mountain ranges and fjord.

Having previously experienced gondolas in Norway we were looking for something different and given that today’s weather was glorious sunshine with temperatures going to be over 20 degrees only a walk would do.

We left the cruise ship on foot and headed out of Olden to a beautiful viewpoint Skarsteinssætra a summer pasture farm.

We followed the trail however admittedly did go wrong and missed the turn for the hiking trail of Skarsteinssætra. A very friendly local guided us back on track, it was the power of body language that we managed to understand each other as they did not speak English and we really should have learned some Norwegian! His friendliness to ensure we re-joined the route safely showed his determination to ensure we enjoyed the walk.

Once on the right trail, the hike takes you through woodlands and forest roads, providing you with breathtaking views of beautiful meadows overlooking the fjords.

As you arrive at Skarsteinssætra the farm houses overlook Loen and the mountains surrounding Olden. The weather was phenomenal and there were multiple benches for a snack whilst taking in the views.

The mountains all around were still tipped with snow and proved to be the perfect backdrop for this location.

You may be lucky to find the visitor’s book on the pasture farm, make sure to sign!

We headed back to Olden to explore the rest of the tranquil village and back to the ship for an afternoon tea or two!
