Bornholm Denmark - The Sunshine Island.

Updated: Oct 20

Created by 3GoExploring.

The sun is shining, and we’ve arrived in Bornholm, Ronne known as the Sunshine Island has kept up to its name.

Our adventure today started as do most days by foot from the cruise ship, a shuttle bus is available, however the extra steps into town help keep those calories down…

We headed towards the town of Ronne at eight this morning, we squinted our eyes past the town as the town exploration was planned for later in the day. We continued our walk along the coastal promenade, early morning swimmers had gathered for what can only be a breath-taking dip. The water looked cold in contrast to the warm air but somehow looked extremely inviting if only we had our swimming gear, maybe next time.

The national forest known as ‘Bålhytte Overdækket’

For a bit of tree-hugging, we headed to the national forest known as ‘Bålhytte Overdækket’ The starting point can be found at Nordskoven Strand Camping. The sounds of woodpeckers surrounded, abundant wood ants were everywhere, always an amazing site to see such little insects carrying such large loads back to the nest. A beautiful 2-mile walk through the woodlands before entering the spectacular beach of Antoinette where common merganser ducks gathered on the sand banks. The beach has crystal clear waters and fine white sand reminiscent of the Caribbean, not a sole in site just us 3 explorers with this beach all to ourselves.

Sunny day with crystal clear waters

As we took in the views the sea went from a mill-pond-like state to booming waves out of the blue, there were no vessels nearby to cause this and we still wonder now what triggered the sudden change in waves. It was certainly memorising to catch the waves crashing into the sand bank – at a distance!

We continued our walk along the beach soaking up the atmosphere and relishing the temperature which had now risen to plus 20 degrees.

The beach eventually returns to the woodland, at this point we decided to return back to Ronne via the welcome cover of the tree canopy, following the well signed footpath we returned to the start point of our walk.

Returning to Ronne we took time to explore the town, taking in the sights and sounds and watching the everyday bustle of the locals while others relaxed in the numerous bars and cafes.

A small accessible beach is located 15 minutes from the cruise port, near to the beach are the remains of a fortification with canons.

Bornholm is a lovely Danish Island with plenty to see, we decided to explore by foot although plenty of excursions are available. This first visit to Denmark has not disappointed, as we set sail for Aarhus we await for what tomorrow’s adventures will bring.
