Medical Tips for Travel

Created by 3GoExploring.

Travelling can be a stressful experience, especially when dealing with medical conditions. As Amy has complex medical conditions, we thought we would share our "Medical Tips for Travel" to help make travelling with medical issues a little bit easier.

From packing the right medications to understanding travel insurance, these tips will help travellers navigate the healthcare system while away from home. Always check with a health care professional prior to travel if required

1. Always carry medication and medical supplies in hand luggage - we do this even for cruise embarkations.

2. Ensure you carry enough medication for the time away ensuring you take into account potential delays.

3. Allergy cards in the language of the countries visited are invaluable. Ensure you list all your allergies and always guarantee you are fully understood and accommodated, if in doubt check then check again. Google translate has come in handy for ingredients listed on packaging.

4. We have always taken a copy of medical notes and prescriptions, you never know when these could be required in an emergency.

5. Always ensure you have the right level of travel insurance cover for your travels, informing them of all conditions and medical needs. Don't forget to purchase as soon as you book. You'll find that depending on your condition you may have to go with bespoke travel insurances, this may increase the price but gurantees you are covered for eventualities. We have to use a bespoke travel insurance company dedicated to those with medical conditions as most others do not cover us, we also personally choose a year-long multi-trip insurance but you can have specific 1 holiday insurance if this suits you better.

6. The use of toilet finding apps are extremely helpful and can give all the information required depending on the disability.

7. Don't forget your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) available for free from the NHS and lasts five years.

8. Most cruiseliners will require you to carry out an On-Boards-Needs prior to sailing, this provides the team with the neccessary information of whether you require an medical fridge or clinical waste etc. P&O accessibility has recently changed, please do check with your Travel Agent or directly contact P&O if you are unsure of these changes made over the last year.

We hope you've enjoyed reading our travel tips, if you have any tips you wish to share please contact us & don't forget to follow us on Facebook at 3GoExploring to keep up-to-date with our travels!
